Who attends the Midwest CDI?
The Midwest CDI is designed for local economic developers, mayors and local officials, state economic development agency staff, federal and regional agency staff, and concerned community leaders.

Where are the participants from?
Most Midwest CDI participants are from Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri, although participants from as far away as Mississippi and Mexico have attended. Participants are typically from small towns, but those from larger cities have also found the training useful.

Why do participants come to Midwest CDI?
Participants want to learn new skills and knowledge to become more effective in their career. Many are also interested in earning certification as a Professional Community and Economic Developer to expand career options.

How long is the annual Midwest CDI conference?
Four days – the session begins at 9:00 AM Monday morning and concludes at approximately 12:00 PM on Thursday.

How much does it cost to attend?
Tuition is $650 (the 2023 $600 Early Bird rate is available through June 30). In addition to tuition, there are hotel costs and some meals. A limited number of scholarships are available, as addressed below.

What is included in the tuition fee?
The top-notch instructors, networking contacts, and class materials are all included. Many meals are covered, including lunch on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Can Midwest CDI cover all of my expenses and invoice me later?
We can invoice you later for the tuition, but you must cover your hotel stay and any other costs you incur.

What do scholarships cover?
There are a limited number of scholarships available through the generosity of our sponsors. We especially encourage applications from a team of two or more participants from the same community, county, or region. The scholarships generally pay $200 per person. Scholarships do not cover hotel or other expenses.

I would like to take two CDI “Years” during the same week. Will that be possible?
Because Years One, Two, and Three are held concurrently and each Years’ courses last for the full 4 days, you can only participate in sessions consecutively each year. For example, the first year you will attend Year One sessions only, attending only Year Two sessions the following year.

My job is very demanding. May I miss some sessions to work instead?
We strongly discourage participants from missing CDI sessions. Unexcused absences will result in the loss of credit toward certification. CDI is designed as a complete curriculum. We do understand, however, that work responsibilities can come into play; to accommodate you, we offer frequent breaks and an extended lunch period each day, which will allow you to contact your office as needed. If you absolutely must attend a work-related meeting or event, please speak with CDI Director Sandy Wittig prior to the week when Midwest CDI sessions begin.

What is appropriate dress for CDI?
Business casual dress is acceptable.

Who can I ask if I have a question that isn’t addressed here?
Please feel free to contact Sandy Wittig at sk-wittig@wiu.edu or by telephoning (309) 298-2637.
